The Flying Fijians rugby team and head coach Mick Byrne are maintaining their focus despite distractions from home. Amid ongoing controversies involving the Fiji Rugby Union and former captain Waisea Nayacalevu, Byrne emphasized that his players remain dedicated to their objectives as they prepare to face Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup final.
Byrne expressed confidence in his team’s mindset, saying, “We’re just focused on what we’re doing here. The boys are really focused. The energy around the room is enormous, and we’ve only got eyes for Saturday.”
A significant decision leading up to the final is the selection of Isaiah Armstrong to start at fullback. Byrne praised Armstrong’s versatility, noting that he not only reinforces the fullback position but also serves as an additional playmaker.
“He enters the game well from fullback, but he also gives us a good opportunity to maintain our territorial game. If we are playing with speed and get across the gain line, he can step up from fullback and jump into that first receiver spot. I think he’s been performing very well in that role,” Byrne stated.
As the team approaches the final, Byrne expressed satisfaction with their physical and mental readiness. He reflected on their preparations following a strong performance against the USA in the semifinals, mentioning that the hot and humid weather in Japan has provided a sense of familiarity for the squad.
With high spirits and confidence, the Flying Fijians are set to take on Japan in what is anticipated to be an exciting final match in the Pacific Nations Cup.
