The Fiji Water Flying Fijians team, along with head coach Mick Byrne, is maintaining their focus despite distractions from home. This comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the Fiji Rugby Union and former captain Waisea Nayacalevu. Byrne emphasized that his players are dedicated to their mission as they prepare to face the host team, Japan, in the Pacific Nations Cup title match.

“We’re just focused on what we’re doing here. The boys are really concentrated. The energy in the room is enormous, and we’ve got our eyes set on Saturday,” Byrne stated.

A significant decision leading into the final is the choice to have Isaiah Armstrong start at fullback. Byrne noted Armstrong’s versatility, pointing out that he not only functions effectively as a fullback but also adds value as a secondary playmaker.

“He transitions well from fullback, providing us the opportunity to maintain our territorial play. If we play at pace and cross the gain line, he can step up from fullback to take on that first receiver role. I believe he has been performing exceptionally in that position,” Byrne explained.

As the team prepares for the final, Byrne expressed satisfaction with the physical and mental well-being of his players. Reflecting on their strong semi-final performance against the USA, he mentioned that the hot and humid conditions in Japan have been a familiar and positive aspect for the squad.

With a confident mindset and strong team spirit, the Flying Fijians are set to compete against Japan in what is anticipated to be an exhilarating Pacific Nations Cup final.
