Flying Fijians Squad Prepares for Showdown Against All Blacks in San Diego

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are intensely preparing for their match against the All Blacks at Snap Dragon Stadium in San Diego, United States, next Saturday, July 20.

Head coach Mick Byrne spoke to SUNsports yesterday, confirming that the squad is free from any major injuries. “All the players trained on Monday. There were a few minor niggles, which is expected after a physical game against Georgia last week,” Byrne said.

Regarding player conditions, Byrne mentioned, “Caleb Muntz is progressing well but hasn’t joined training yet; we expect him to join later in the week.”

Byrne expressed his intention to maintain the current squad for the Pacific Nations Cup in August. “The Flying Fijians have seen significant growth over the last couple of years, especially with the inclusion of the Fijian Drua team, which has brought a more professional depth to the squad,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of focusing on their preparation and supporting the players, acknowledging the challenges posed by well-resourced teams. Byrne specifically highlighted the need for a strong defensive strategy against the All Blacks. “We need to limit their use of the ball and be ready for the fast-paced game they want to play,” he noted. “We’ll prepare accordingly over the next two weeks.”

The match is part of New Zealand Rugby’s efforts to expand the All Blacks brand in the United States and elevate the sport’s profile. The US is set to host the men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033, respectively. New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson told Forbes last month that hosting back-to-back World Cups in the US provides a “real north star for the sport.”
