Waisea Nayacalevu, despite raising allegations of unpaid bonuses and corruption within Rugby House, has secured a spot in the Flying Fijians squad for their upcoming Europe tour. Joining him are veterans such as Semi Radradra, Albert Tuisue, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Samuel Matavesi, and Meli Derenalagi, who have also supported Nayacalevu’s claims.
Nayacalevu and Tevita Ikanivere have been appointed as co-captains for the squad. When questioned about the selection amid the ongoing controversy, Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne stated that the selection process was unbiased and based solely on performance. He emphasized, “It has nothing to do with team selection. I’ll pick the best players to play for the country in the tour.”
Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union Trustees, confirmed that the final selection decision rests with the head coach, stating, “We (interim Trustees) have no say in it.”
Notably, Racing 92 winger Josua Tuisova is making a return to the Flying Fijians lineup. Byrne highlighted the significance of the tour, noting the team’s upcoming matches against Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Spain. He acknowledged the potential challenges, especially with climate conditions, but expressed optimism as the weather in those areas is currently cool.
The squad does see the absence of strong center Iosefo Masi, who is sidelined due to injury. Byrne acknowledged Masi’s contributions and emphasized the importance of his recovery after a demanding season that included participation in Super Rugby and the Olympic Games.
While maintaining the core of the team from the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC), Byrne has incorporated players like Sireli Maqala, Jiuta Wainiqolo, and Saimoni Uluinakauvadra. He noted Maqala’s previous experience in the full-back position and praised the versatility within the team’s backline.
The PNC squad has had a brief break to recuperate before training resumes to prepare for the European tour. Byrne stated the goal of scouting and integrating new talent to ensure a well-rounded team.
The Flying Fijians will face Scotland on November 2 at Murrayfield, followed by matches against Wales on November 10 in Cardiff, Spain on November 17, and culminating with a game against Ireland in Dublin on November 23.
