Flying Fijians Set for Performance Review: What’s Next for Coach Mick Byrne?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne will present a report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to assess the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu spoke to SUNsports and explained that this review process is a standard procedure at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from Australia and will discuss the outcomes of the recent tour during the board meeting. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performances, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the defeat against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and improvements in their world ranking are positive signs to build upon for the future.

Nayacalevu expressed concerns regarding limited player access, particularly due to the Barbarians game in Twickenham coinciding with the Super Rugby season and falling outside of the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that these are key areas of concern.

He also highlighted that all staff members, including Byrne, have key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in their job descriptions. Any directives will be issued following the review process once Coach Mick returns to the island. Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation after the recent tour.
