Flying Fijians Set for Performance Review: What’s Next?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to discuss the team’s recent performances. Rovereto Nayacalevu, the chief executive officer of the FRU, confirmed that this review process is standard practice after each campaign.

Byrne has recently returned from Australia and will provide an update on the team’s recent tour during his meeting with the board. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu expressed mixed feelings. He noted that while the outcome of the match against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in world rankings are positive developments to build upon.

Nayacalevu pointed out that one of the significant concerns is the limited access to players, particularly since the game against the Barbarians at Twickenham took place during the Super Rugby season and outside of the World Rugby access window.

All staff members, including Byrne, have specific key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in their job descriptions. Nayacalevu indicated that any directions or decisions would follow the review process once Coach Mick returns to Fiji. Additionally, he confirmed that Eleina McDonald, manager of the Flying Fijians, has submitted her resignation after the recent tour.
