Flying Fijians Set for Crucial Performance Review

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to evaluate the team’s recent performance. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu explained that it is standard practice for the board to review all performance aspects at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has recently returned from Australia and will provide a report on the team’s performance during the recent tour. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged the disappointing result against the All Blacks but noted the positive outcomes from the victory over Georgia and the subsequent rise in world rankings, which could serve as a foundation for future progress.

Nayacalevu mentioned a couple of areas of concern, particularly the limited access to players due to the scheduling of the Barbarians game at Twickenham overlapping with the Super Rugby season and outside the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that all staff members, including Byrne, have key performance indicators (KPIs) specified in their job descriptions. Any directives will be provided after the review process once Coach Byrne is back in Fiji.

Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
