Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to assess the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that it is standard practice for the board to review all aspects of performance following each campaign.
“The head coach has returned from Australia and will debrief the board on the recent tour this week,” Nayacalevu noted. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, he acknowledged that while the outcome against the All Blacks fell short of expectations, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent rise in world rankings are positive developments to build upon.
Nayacalevu expressed concerns regarding the limited access to players due to the Barbarian’s match in Twickenham coinciding with the Super Rugby season and falling outside the World Rugby access window. “These are two areas of concern,” he commented.
He emphasized that all staff members, including Byrne, have specific performance indicators (KPIs) stipulated in their job descriptions. “Any directives will be communicated following the review process once Coach Mick is back on the island,” he mentioned. Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
