Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to meet with the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to review the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu confirmed this in a statement to SUNsports, explaining that it is standard procedure for the board to assess all aspects of performance at the conclusion of each campaign.
Byrne has just returned from Australia and will provide the board with insights from the recent tour. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu responded that while the defeat against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in the team’s world ranking offer a foundation for future growth.
One of the concerns highlighted by Nayacalevu was the restricted access to players due to the Barbarians match, which took place during the Super Rugby season and outside of the World Rugby access window. He stressed that these limitations pose challenges that need to be addressed.
Nayacalevu emphasized that all staff members, including Byrne, have established key performance indicators (KPIs) designated in their job descriptions. He noted that any directives would follow the review process once Coach Mick returns to Fiji.
Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
