Flying Fijians Face Key Review After Rollercoaster Tour

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to review the team’s recent performances. In a statement to SUNsports, FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu explained that it is customary for the board to assess all performance aspects at the end of each campaign.

Byrne has recently returned from Australia and will discuss the outcomes of the recent tour with the board. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performances, Nayacalevu acknowledged that, although the result against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and subsequent improvement in world rankings provide a solid foundation for future growth.

Nayacalevu raised concerns regarding limited player access, particularly since the Barbarians game at Twickenham took place during the Super Rugby season and outside the designated World Rugby access window. He emphasized that these factors are a significant concern.

All staff members, including Byrne, have established key performance indicators (KPIs) as part of their job roles. Any directives will be issued after the review process is complete and Coach Mick is back on the island. Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has resigned following the recent tour.
