The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will not receive any bonuses for winning matches during their upcoming November tour, as confirmed by Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union. This decision came after a request from one player through the players’ welfare association advocating for bonuses.
Mazey explained that the union is unable to afford these bonuses, citing significant financial strains from previous campaigns, notably the Rugby World Cup, which cost around $11 million, a third of which went directly to players. He emphasized the importance of playing for the country rather than for personal gain, stating, “We all have to live on what we earn and we can’t afford to keep doing this.”
Furthermore, Jenny See-to, a board member of the Fiji Rugby Union, noted that bonuses are typically funded by the Government’s generosity rather than the union itself, which lacks the financial resources to provide such bonuses.
While this news may initially seem disappointing for the players, it also highlights the greater challenges faced by sports organizations in managing finances, especially in the wake of major events like the Rugby World Cup. The emphasis on national pride and teamwork can motivate the Flying Fijians as they prepare for their matches, showcasing their commitment to representing Fiji on the international stage.
Despite the lack of bonuses, the team’s focus on national representation could serve to unify and inspire them, potentially leading to strong performances during the tour. Supporting each other and rallying around a common goal can foster an even deeper team spirit and dedication to their country.
