The Fiji Rugby Union has announced that the Flying Fijians will not receive bonus payments for match victories during their November tour. This decision was confirmed by interim board chairman Peter Mazey, who stated that the proposal for bonuses came from a player through the players’ welfare association.
Mazey emphasized that the union firmly believes it can no longer afford to offer these bonuses. He acknowledged the financial strain posed by the recent Rugby World Cup campaign, which cost approximately $11 million, including a significant portion allocated to players. He urged the players to focus on representing their country rather than seeking personal financial gain.
Board member Jenny See-to further clarified that bonuses are typically funded through government support, as the union does not have the financial resources to independently provide bonuses.
While the decision not to offer bonuses may be disappointing for some players, it reflects the union’s commitment to sustainable financial practices. The emphasis on national representation can foster a stronger team spirit, ultimately benefiting the players and the nation as they strive for excellence together.
In summary, the Fiji Rugby Union has chosen to forgo bonus payments during the upcoming November tour, prioritizing financial sustainability and the spirit of team unity over individual financial incentives. This decision, albeit challenging, reinforces a collective commitment to the sport and the pride of representing Fiji on the international stage.
