Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to meet with the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to discuss the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu shared that this meeting is part of the standard procedure where the board reviews all performance aspects after each campaign.
Byrne has just returned from Australia and will provide an update on the recent tour during this week’s meeting. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ recent results, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the loss to the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory against Georgia and an improvement in world rankings are positive aspects to build on moving forward.
Nayacalevu pointed out concerns regarding limited access to players, especially since the Barbarians game in Twickenham coincided with the Super Rugby season and occurred outside of the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that both performance reviews and staff, including Byrne, have pre-established key performance indicators (KPIs) in their job descriptions. Any directives stemming from the review will be provided once Coach Mick is back in Fiji.
Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
