Wearing the white Flying Fijians jersey and competing on a worldwide stage is a remarkable opportunity for those selected to represent their country. Mark Evans, the CEO of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, emphasized that swapping the blue jersey for the white one represents a significant chance for player development.
Evans pointed out that the Flying Fijians roster includes numerous players from the Drua franchise, which he views as a unique position with considerable advantages. He stated, “I don’t think there’s another team in the world that provides such a large percentage of the national team from a single club.”
He also acknowledged the potential of the Drua players, noting that their participation in the national team post-Super Rugby further enhances their development. “If we only play Super Rugby, that’s just 14 games, and possibly more if we reach the finals,” Evans said. “For emerging players, that’s simply not enough.”
With around 22 to 23 players transitioning to the Flying Fijians, they can gain an additional seven to ten games, which Evans believes significantly benefits their growth. “It’s a substantial advantage for us, and the variety of play styles further accelerates the development of individual players,” he added.
The Drua will kick off their Super Rugby season against the Brumbies on Saturday, February 25, 2025, at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
