FLP Demands Resignation of FICAC Commissioner: Controversy Unfolds

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has called for the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation is necessary until the complaints against her regarding abuse of office are resolved by impartial officials.

Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while under investigation would be a serious injustice. He pointed out that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment was fast-tracked.

Additionally, Chaudhry raised concerns about the close relationship between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, suggesting that while Leung presents himself as an independent figure, he has been involved in her appointment behind the scenes.

He also mentioned that Malimali did not apply for the FICAC commissioner position when it was initially advertised in June 2024 but submitted her application when it was reannounced on July 13.

Attempts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
