The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is demanding the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry expressed that she should step down until allegations of misconduct against her are thoroughly investigated by unbiased officials.
Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while being under investigation would be a serious injustice. He pointed out that at the time of her appointment, Malimali was under arrest and subject to questioning, raising concerns about the process surrounding her selection.
He also noted a concerning connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. While Leung presents himself as a neutral party, Chaudhry claims he is closely involved in her appointment behind the scenes.
Chaudhry revealed that Malimali was not initially an applicant for the FICAC commissioner position when it was first advertised in June 2024, although she did submit her application after it was readvertised on July 13.
Attempts to reach Malimali for comment were unsuccessful.
