FLP Demands Resignation of FICAC Commissioner Amid Controversy

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has demanded that Barbara Malimali resign from her position as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation is necessary until allegations of abuse of office against her are properly addressed by independent and impartial officials.

Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would be a serious injustice. He pointed out that she was being questioned during her arrest when her appointment was prepared, which he described as a hijacking of the process.

Concerns were also raised by Chaudhry regarding the apparent connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. He suggested that although Leung portrays himself as an independent observer, he is closely involved with Malimali’s appointment behind the scenes.

Chaudhry revealed that Malimali did not initially apply for the FICAC commissioner’s position when it was first advertised in June 2024 but submitted her application when the position was readvertised on July 13. Attempts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
