The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is demanding the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that her resignation is necessary until the allegations against her for abuse of office are properly addressed by impartial officials.
Chaudhry expressed that allowing Malimali to take the helm of FICAC while she is under investigation would be a grave injustice. He noted that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment was prematurely finalized.
Concerns were also raised about a potential conflict of interest involving Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. Chaudhry stated that while Leung presents himself as an independent observer, he is closely linked to Malimali’s appointment behind the scenes.
Furthermore, Chaudhry revealed that Malimali was not a candidate for the FICAC commissioner’s role when it was initially advertised in June 2024, but submitted an application after the position was re-advertised on July 13. Attempts to reach Malimali for comment were unsuccessful.
