FLP Demands Resignation Amid Corruption Concerns

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has urged Barbara Malimali to resign from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation is necessary until the allegations of abuse of office against her are properly addressed by independent and impartial authorities.

Chaudhry expressed that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would be a significant miscarriage of justice. He pointed out that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment was expedited.

Additionally, Chaudhry highlighted concerns regarding the connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. Despite Leung’s public portrayal as an unbiased observer, Chaudhry claimed that he played a crucial role in her appointment behind the scenes.

It was noted that Malimali did not apply for the FICAC commissioner’s position when it was initially advertised in June 2024 but later submitted an application when the position was re-announced on July 13. Efforts to reach Malimali for comment were unsuccessful.
