FLP Demands Resignation Amid Corruption Claims

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has requested the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation should take place until the allegations of abuse of office against her are addressed by independent and impartial officials.

Chaudhry emphasized that allowing her to lead FICAC while under investigation would be a serious injustice. “It should be noted that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment process was prematurely completed,” he remarked.

He also raised concerns about the connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. “While the Attorney-General is trying to present himself as an independent and impartial figure, we know he is closely linked to her appointment behind the scenes,” Chaudhry stated.

Chaudhry noted that they have credible information indicating that Malimali did not apply for the FICAC commissioner position when it was originally advertised in June 2024, but submitted her application when the role was reposted on July 13.

Attempts to reach Malimali for a comment on the matter were unsuccessful.
