FLP Demands FICAC Chief’s Resignation Amid Controversy

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is demanding the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that she should step down until the allegations of abuse of office against her are thoroughly investigated by unbiased officials.

Chaudhry remarked that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would undermine the principles of justice. He pointed out that during her arrest and questioning, her appointment was rushed through, which he deemed inappropriate.

He expressed concern about the close relationship between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, suggesting that while Leung portrays himself as an impartial figure, he has been intricately involved in her appointment.

Chaudhry further noted that sources indicated Malimali had not applied for the commissioner position when it was first advertised in June 2024, but she submitted her application when the position was re-advertised on July 13.

Attempts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
