The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has demanded the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation is necessary until allegations of abuse of office against her are thoroughly investigated by independent and impartial officials.
Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would be a serious miscarriage of justice. He noted that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment process was abruptly expedited.
He raised concerns about the apparent connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, suggesting that while the Attorney-General presents himself as an independent figure, he is substantially involved in her appointment behind the scenes.
Additionally, Chaudhry mentioned that Malimali was not an applicant for the FICAC commissioner position when it was first advertised in June 2024, but later submitted her application when the position was re-listed on July 13.
Efforts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
