FLP Calls for Accountability: Is FICAC’s New Head Fit to Serve?

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has demanded the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her role as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that this call for resignation is necessary until the allegations of abuse of office against her are thoroughly investigated by impartial and independent officials.

Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to continue in her position while she is under investigation would represent a serious injustice. He noted that she was under arrest and being questioned when her appointment process was abruptly accelerated.

Moreover, he expressed concerns about the apparent connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, arguing that while Leung presents himself as an impartial observer, he is actually closely involved in her appointment.

Chaudhry also mentioned that Malimali was not among the applicants when the FICAC commissioner position was originally advertised in June 2024, but she did apply after it was re-advertised on July 13.

Attempts to reach Ms. Malimali for a comment went unanswered.
