Businesses in several towns within the western division, including Ba and Rakiraki, faced significant disruptions due to rising water levels caused by recent weather conditions. As a precaution, both towns had to shut down operations to ensure the safety of local businesses and residents.

Moshin Khan, the special administrator chair of Ba Town Council, explained that the decision to close Ba town during the flooding was made to safeguard commercial establishments. His team has been actively collaborating with the Ba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Fiji National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO), Fiji Police, and the National Fire Authority (NFA) to address the situation effectively.

On Friday, Ba Main Street was initially open; however, closures began around 1 PM to 2 PM as water levels increased. The Market Arcade experienced flooding by 7 AM, leading to water entering several shops.

In Tavua, health inspector Serevi Nabura reported the closure of MaxVal-U supermarket for the day. Although Tavua town remained open for business, flooding impacted areas near the Shop N Shop supermarket due to spills from nearby rivers. Rakiraki town also faced closures when water levels rose from the local creek.

In contrast, Nadi Town Council’s chief executive officer Muni Reddy stated that business was continuing as usual, with many businesses beginning the cleanup process. Additionally, Suresh Naidu, chairman of the Nadroga Navosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that operations in the rugby town were stable.

While these weather-related challenges brought temporary obstacles, the resilience displayed by local businesses and authorities bodes well for their recovery. The cooperation and swift response of the local government and businesses demonstrate a strong community spirit that will contribute positively to the rebuilding efforts.

This situation highlights the importance of community support and collaboration in times of crisis, reminding us that with collective effort, challenges can be navigated successfully.
