Residents in Boca, Bulileka, Labasa, are expressing their frustration over ongoing flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage systems in the area. Jai Karan, a long-time resident, has highlighted the inaction of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) despite multiple requests over the last 25 years to address the blocked drains that contribute to these severe flooding events.
“We have been living with blocked drains for decades, and we once again urge the FRA to take action to help prevent flooding, which impacts all residents,” Karan stated. The flooding not only disrupts daily life but has also posed significant risks for motorists who must navigate the flooded Boca Loop Circular Road during heavy rains to reach their jobs or Labasa Town.
The situation is further complicated by health concerns. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for the Northern region, has warned that residents should refrain from dumping household waste into drains and creeks. This irresponsible behavior worsens blockages and amplifies the flooding issue, ultimately increasing risks for illnesses such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea (LTDD).
As the community continues to call for urgent action to mitigate flooding worries, they remain hopeful that cooperation from the FRA will lead to necessary improvements in their drainage systems, which will enhance their living conditions and safeguard public health.
This situation emphasizes the importance of addressing infrastructure issues to avoid long-term risks and inconveniences for communities. By working together, residents and authorities can create a safer, healthier environment for all.
