Flooding Crisis: Boca Residents Demand Action from Authorities

Residents of Boca in Bulileka, Labasa, are expressing serious concerns over ongoing flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage systems in their area. Jai Karan, a longtime local resident, has pointed out that despite his community’s persistent efforts over the past 25 years to urge the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to clean and maintain the drains, little progress has been made.

“The blocked drains have led to flash floods for decades. We once again urge the FRA to address this issue and help prevent flooding, which affects all our residents,” Karan stated.

The recurring floods not only inconvenience locals but also pose significant risks, particularly to motorists who must navigate the Boca Loop Circular Road amid heavy rains to reach their jobs in Labasa Town. Additionally, the flooding creates potential health hazards for the community.

Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for Northern, has called on residents to avoid disposing of household waste in drains and creeks, as this worsens blockages and heightens the probability of flooding. “Flooded areas increase the risk of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhea,” he cautioned.

The community continues to seek immediate action from authorities to mitigate flooding issues, thereby protecting their health and improving their living conditions.

In light of these challenges, it is hopeful that increased awareness and civic engagement will prompt the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to address drainage problems, ultimately leading to a safer and healthier environment for the residents. Enhancing cooperation between community members and local officials could pave the way for long-term sustainable solutions.
