Families in Ba, Lautoka, and Tavua have experienced significant distress as severe rainfall overnight caused flooding that submerged their homes. Many residents from low-lying areas have been forced to seek alternative shelter as their houses became uninhabitable.
Divisional Commissioner Western for Police, Apolosi Lewaqai, provided an encouraging update, noting that despite the challenges faced by affected families, the situation is improving. He reported that floodwaters are receding in Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua, which is a hopeful sign for those impacted.
Lewaqai mentioned that some families have successfully relocated to evacuation centers. He shared an example of a family in Ba that was stranded and needed assistance to move to safety. Authorities are prepared to continue aiding those in need until flood conditions fully normalize.
He expressed optimism that today marks a shift towards recovery and stability, stating, “So today, they will go back to normal, and we are trying to help families and businesses reach this normalcy.”
