Authorities have instructed 190 evacuees, who have found shelter at Andrews Primary School in Nadi due to recent flooding, to return to their homes. However, five families have requested an extension of their stay, as water levels in their areas have not yet receded.
The flooding occurred three days ago, predominantly affecting residents from the low-lying regions of the Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements in Nawaka. Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga directed that all evacuees vacate the evacuation center by 3 PM yesterday.
Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika shared that while most families returned home, the remaining five are concerned about the possibility of more rain and the remaining high water levels in their neighborhoods. Despite their concerns, the DO has emphasized that all evacuees must leave the center, adding to the urgency of the situation. Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the support received during the challenging time, particularly from the local Muslim community and the Hare Krishna group. Additional assistance has come from various organizations, including the People’s Alliance Party and South Pacific Foundation.
This collective effort demonstrates the resilience and unity within the community, showcasing how people come together in times of crisis to support those in need. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community solidarity amidst adversity.
In summary, while evacuees are being urged to return home, some are justifiably cautious about their situations. However, the ongoing support from local groups and the community highlights a hopeful outcome for the affected families as recovery continues.
