After recent flooding in Nadi, 190 evacuees have been cleared to return home. However, five families have requested to extend their stay for another day due to lingering high water levels near their residences. The Andrews Primary School has been serving as an evacuation center.
Most evacuees come from low-lying areas, such as Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu in Nawaka. Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, urged evacuees to leave the school by 3 pm yesterday, although the five families expressed their concerns about potentially worsening weather. Evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika noted the importance of staying safe until the water recedes completely.
Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, Mr. Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the shelter and assistance received during this difficult time. Local organizations, including the Muslim community, Hare Krishna group, People’s Alliance party, and various NGOs have come together to provide support to those affected.
This situation highlights the resilience of the community in the face of adversity and the importance of collective support during challenging times, offering hope for recovery and rebuilding in the aftermath of natural disasters.
