A group of 190 evacuees has been instructed to return to their homes following the recent flooding in Nadi. However, five families have expressed concerns, requesting to remain at the Andrews Primary School evacuation center for an additional day due to high water levels near their residences.
The adverse weather conditions caused significant flooding in low-lying areas, particularly affecting families in the Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements. Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga has urged evacuees to vacate the classrooms of the temporary shelter by 3 PM.
One evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, noted that while most families are returning home, the five families are worried about potential further rain and have requested more time to allow the waters to recede fully. Despite their concerns, the officer insisted that everyone must leave, adding that the families have been actively involved in cleaning up their properties after the flood.
Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the assistance received during this challenging time, highlighting support from local religious groups such as the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna organization, as well as help from organizations like the People’s Alliance party, Frenzco Beverage Limited, and various non-governmental organizations.
In the face of adversity, the community’s spirit of cooperation and support shines through, offering hope and resilience as families prepare to return home and restore normalcy in their lives.
This incident highlights the importance of community support in disaster situations and illustrates how collective efforts can significantly impact recovery.
