Business owners in Nadi Town are grappling with a troubling situation in the aftermath of recent floods. The devastating floodwaters not only impacted their businesses but also left shopkeepers in distress, as they discovered human waste in shop corridors. These unsanitary conditions seem to stem from individuals with mental health challenges, many of whom seek refuge in these corridors overnight.
Bobby Janendra Vikash, the proprietor of Mega Paper Supplies, voiced his discontent, stating that he has repeatedly alerted the Nadi Town Council about the situation. He noted that the corridors near his shop are frequently used by those with mental health issues. “It is not the council that cleans these feces, it is us, the shop owners, who are cleaning them,” Vikash lamented. The overwhelming smell of the waste forced him to clean both his shop area and the surrounding street.
The Special Administrator of the council, Saliceni Raiwalui, recognizes that this problem necessitates collaboration among various parties. “This is not new. We have received complaints on this. The council cannot do this alone,” he stated. Mr. Raiwalui mentioned that while efforts have been made to provide assistance to these individuals, many have returned to the streets. He proposed implementing stricter measures for those responsible for such litter and emphasized the importance of community responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.
Mr. Vikash, who also serves as an advisory councillor and chairman of the Nadi district, highlighted that blockages in drains—often caused by litter—contribute to flooding in rural areas. He suggested that the Ministry of Health and Environment should consider appointing officers to monitor littering and enforce accountability for those who disregard their surroundings.
This situation, while dire, indicates an opportunity for community engagement and improvement in public health and sanitation efforts. Collaborative measures involving local businesses, government agencies, and community members could lead to a cleaner and safer environment for all. With proactive dialogue and action, there is hope for a resolution that maintains both the dignity of those in need and the well-being of the community at large.
In summary, the intersection of environmental cleanliness, mental health support, and responsible community behavior presents a chance for meaningful change in Nadi Town. Together, stakeholders can create a healthier atmosphere that benefits everyone.
