Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, has set his sights on constructing a more resilient home that can withstand future floods. Recently, he, along with his wife and five children, were forced to evacuate their house after floodwaters inundated their living space. Currently, they are among those seeking shelter at Andrews Primary School in Nadi.
In 2019, Baleidreima purchased land at the Nawaijikuma Settlement in Nawaka, which is known to be susceptible to flooding, and subsequently built a makeshift home. He revealed that flooding has repeatedly impacted their lives, necessitating evacuations to temporary shelters each time.
Expressing his hopes, Mr. Baleidreima stated, “My only wish is to build a high post-setting house for my family.” However, he faces financial challenges that prioritize his children’s education over housing development at this time. His eldest child attends Nadi Special School, while his second child is set to enter high school next year, with the rest in primary school.
Recalling their recent evacuation, he recounted the harrowing experience of Christmas Day when floodwaters unexpectedly surged into their home. The family quickly packed essential items before being transported to safety.
Once the waters recede, Mr. Baleidreima plans to return and clean their home, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. While the journey ahead may be challenging, his determination to provide a better life for his family shines through.
This story serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the need for community support when dealing with the impacts of natural disasters. With determination and a focus on education, families like Mr. Baleidreima’s can work towards rebuilding not only their homes but also their futures.
