A flash flood warning is currently in effect for low-lying and flood-prone regions within the Northern Division. Uraia Rainima, the Commissioner for Northern Division, stated that following the Fiji Meteorological Service’s announcement of strong winds in the region on Saturday, he immediately convened a meeting with leaders from essential services.

In his remarks, Mr. Rainima noted the participation of key agencies such as the Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Police, and the National Fire Authority during this urgent meeting. “The connecting roads have remained clear throughout the island over the weekend, despite the heavy rainfall in recent days,” he added.

Stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, have been alerted to ensure that schools designated as evacuation centers are adequately prepared. Mr. Rainima emphasized the importance of precaution, urging residents to make safe choices for themselves and their families in anticipation of potential flooding. “We don’t want to risk the lives of first responders, so it’s advisable for people to take their families to a safe place before any possible floods.”

In summary, authorities are actively taking measures to ensure public safety in light of the current weather conditions, demonstrating efficient collaboration among various agencies.

This situation, while concerning, highlights the proactive approach of local leadership in preparing for adverse weather events and comforting the community with their active response strategies. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
