A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In an update released last night, FijiMet stated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, leading to cloudy weather across much of the nation. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is approaching, which is set to bring increased cloud cover and rain starting today.

The weather office has cautioned that localized flooding may occur on roads, iris crossings, and low water bridges. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised communities and villages in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, including Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety advisories issued by officials.

“Flash flooding is anticipated in low-lying and flood-prone areas due to the predicted heavy rain. The public is strongly urged to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height,” said the NDMO.

Additionally, a strong wind warning has been issued for land areas of Kadavu and the nearby Yasawa and Mamanuca waters, as well as for the southwest Viti Levu and Kadavu passage.
