A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In its latest update, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, resulting in overcast conditions across much of the country. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is approaching, which is expected to bring increased cloud cover and rainfall starting today.

The weather agency has cautioned about the potential for localized flooding on roads, river crossings, and low water bridges.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has urged communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as those in Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, including Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain vigilant and adhere closely to safety advisories issued by authorities.

“Given the forecast of heavy rain, flash flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas. The public is strongly advised to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and pathways where water levels exceed knee height,” the NDMO stated.

Furthermore, a strong wind warning has been activated for the land areas of Kadavu, the nearby smaller islands, Yasawa, and Mamanuca waters, as well as southwest Viti Levu and the Kadavu passage.
