Flash Flood Alert Issued for Viti Levu: Stay Safe!

A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In a recent update, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, leading to cloudy weather across much of the region. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is approaching, which is expected to bring increased clouds and rain starting today.

The weather service has cautioned about localized flooding affecting roads, river crossings, and low water bridges.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, including Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by authorities.

The NDMO emphasized the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable areas due to the anticipated heavy rainfall, urging the public to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height.

Moreover, a strong wind warning is in effect for land areas of Kadavu and the nearby smaller islands, as well as the waters of Yasawa and Mamanuca, southwest Viti Levu, and the Kadavu passage.
