Flash Flood Alert Issued for Viti Levu: Are You Prepared?

A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In an update provided last evening, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, leading to overcast conditions throughout much of the country. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is approaching, which is expected to introduce more clouds and rain, starting today.

The weather agency has cautioned about potential localized flooding affecting roads, iris crossings, and low water bridges. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has also urged villages and communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands such as Moala and those in the Southern Lau Group, to remain vigilant and to follow safety advisories issued by authorities.

The NDMO emphasized the importance of caution, stating, “With flash flooding expected in low-lying and flood-prone areas due to anticipated heavy rain, the public is strongly advised to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where the water is above knee level.”

Additionally, a strong wind warning is now in effect for land areas of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the waters surrounding Yasawa and Mamanuca, southwest Viti Levu, and the Kadavu passage.
