Residents of Nabuna village in the Cawa district on Koro Island are cautiously optimistic about the upcoming establishment of a five-star hotel on their land. While they are enthusiastic about the potential for job creation and economic growth, there are concerns regarding the possible negative effects on the marine ecosystem.
Sekaia Bolabola, the district representative for Cawa, expressed that the hotel development would stimulate economic activity and provide employment for local youth. “We are looking forward to the five-star hotel that will be established here in Nabuna,” he stated, noting that it would be developed by international investors.
Despite the hopeful outlook, Bolabola emphasized the importance of maintaining the health of the marine environment throughout the development process. “A lot of development is coming through; however, we hope our marine ecosystem is maintained in the process,” he remarked, suggesting that further discussions on this matter are needed.
Bolabola believes that the new hotel will offer significant job opportunities, encouraging young people to seek work locally and helping to divert their attention from negative social issues. He mentioned that construction on the hotel project is expected to begin soon, likely within the next few weeks.
Additionally, a feasibility study has been conducted for a proposed jetty in Nabuna, which would facilitate easier access for local business operators and villagers.
