Fishing Ban Lifted: What’s Next for Grouper and Coral Trout?

The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially lifted the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral trout, also known as Kawakawa and Donu, which was in effect until September 30. These fish are crucial for coastal marine ecosystems and are highly regarded for their nutritional and economic value.

The seasonal ban was established to safeguard these species during their spawning period, ensuring their populations are not overfished, as a decline could threaten the sustainability of the fishery.

Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed gratitude to the Fijian community for their cooperation during the ban, which lasted from June 1 to September 30. She encouraged the public to continue collaborating to sustain, manage, and protect the fisheries and ocean resources.

“With the ban now lifted, I urge everyone to practice responsible and sustainable fishing,” Bainivalu stated.
