Fishing Ban Lifted: What’s Next for Grouper and Coral Trout?

The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially lifted the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral trout, known locally as Kawakawa and Donu, which concluded on September 30.

These fish species play a crucial role in coastal marine ecosystems and are highly prized for their nutritional value and economic significance.

The seasonal ban was implemented to safeguard these fish during their spawning period and to prevent overfishing, which could lead to a decline in their population and threaten the sustainability of the fishery.

Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed gratitude to the people of Fiji for their cooperation and support during the ban, which was in effect from June 1 to September 30.

He urged the community to continue collaborating to sustain, manage, and protect the nation’s fisheries and ocean resources.

“Now that the ban has been lifted, I encourage everyone to practice responsible and sustainable fishing,” emphasized Bainivalu.
