The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially ended the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral trout, also known as Kawakawa and Donu, which was in place until September 30. These fish are essential to coastal marine ecosystems and are significant for local food sources and income.
The ban was enacted to safeguard these species during their breeding season and to prevent overfishing, which could lead to a decline in their population and endanger the fishery.
Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed gratitude to Fijians for their support and adherence to the seasonal restrictions that lasted from June 1 to September 30. She encouraged the community to continue collaborating to maintain, manage, and protect fisheries and ocean resources.
“With the ban lifted, I encourage everyone to practice responsible and sustainable fishing,” Bainivalu emphasized.
