Ranjana Devi Pillay, a 42-year-old from Balata in Tavua, has made her family proud by becoming the first lawyer in her family. This significant milestone was influenced by her form teacher’s suggestion years ago and has turned into a guiding light for her career.

While reflecting on her upbringing, Ms. Pillay recounts the challenges her family faced, particularly financial difficulties. Despite these obstacles, her parents prioritized education to ensure their children had the opportunities they needed to succeed. Ms. Pillay fondly remembers her childhood, filled with vibrant family gatherings where music played a central role and active participation in sports, particularly netball and athletics.

Throughout her educational journey, Ms. Pillay’s mother was a constant source of support. She not only encouraged her to pursue a law degree but also ensured she applied to law school and stayed on track during her studies. The process of balancing work and education was demanding, but the encouragement from her siblings and friends bolstered her confidence. They believed in her potential, often teasing her about her worries regarding grades, reinforcing that success was already within her reach.

However, her path was not without difficulties, especially when her brother suffered a brain hemorrhage while studying in the United States. This family crisis occurred during Ms. Pillay’s crucial final exams, leaving her to navigate through the stress largely on her own. Thankfully, her lecturers showed tremendous understanding, facilitating her online attendance and assessments during this challenging time.

When Ms. Pillay graduated and received her bar admission, it marked an emotional high point for her family. Despite her father’s absence, she felt a profound sense of pride and joy, particularly as her mother and brother celebrated this achievement with her. Becoming the first lawyer in her family holds immense significance not only for her but for her entire family.

Currently, Ms. Pillay works as an investigator at the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission. She encourages aspiring law students to remain resilient and passionate about their studies. She emphasizes the value of a positive attitude and asking questions as essential elements to succeed in such a demanding field.

Ms. Pillay’s journey exemplifies the importance of perseverance, family support, and dedication in achieving one’s dreams. Her story is an inspiring reminder that, regardless of the obstacles faced, success can be attained with hard work and the right support network.

In a hopeful tone, her story showcases how determination combined with family support can lead to remarkable achievements and inspire others on similar paths.
