The Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications is actively conducting fireworks safety inspections at major retail locations ahead of the Diwali celebrations, during which fireworks are commonly used for private, traditional, and religious events.
In a statement, the ministry has highlighted the importance of adhering to consumer fireworks regulations, which include a selective ban on certain hazardous fireworks to mitigate the potential for accidents, injuries, and property damage. The regulations are designed to allow safe participation in festivities while prioritizing safety.
Retailers are mandated to secure the necessary licenses from the Mineral Resources Department for the storage, handling, and sale of fireworks, as they are classified as explosive substances under the Explosives Act. The ministry has noted that specific types of fireworks, such as shells, firecrackers, aerial wheels, and mines, present significant risks to public safety when not used appropriately.
Violations of regulations can lead to serious consequences for traders, including potential prosecution and fines up to $25,000, with on-the-spot fines of $2,000 for immediate infractions. Additionally, the ministry strongly advises that children under 18 should not handle fireworks, while those older can do so only under careful adult supervision.
The inspection efforts will continue throughout the festive season, and in the past three days alone, officials inspected 185 retailers, of which 85 were compliant with the licensing requirements. However, two instances of non-compliance were reported.
These proactive measures reflect the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable celebration for all citizens, suggesting that with proper adherence to safety practices, festivities can be both thrilling and secure.
In summary, as the Diwali celebrations approach, safety inspections are being intensified to promote responsible use of fireworks, underscoring the importance of compliance with regulations for a safe holiday experience.
