Fire Safety Alarm: Spacing Could Cost Lives in Suva’s Settlements

Concerns about inadequate spacing between houses in informal settlements have come to the forefront following a fire incident in Cunningham Stage 1, Suva, which destroyed three homes. National Fire Authority (NFA) CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted that this issue contributes significantly to the rapid spread of fires. He expressed disappointment that house fires persist despite ongoing outreach and awareness initiatives from the NFA.

The recent blaze occurred during a time when families are preparing for the school year, emphasizing the need for fire safety. In densely populated areas, the proximity of homes without adhering to any spacing standards increases the risk of fire spreading quickly to neighboring properties. Fortunately, no lives were lost during this incident, although significant damage was reported.

Details from the fire indicate that the first house suffered damages estimated at $60,000, while the second house faced 80 to 90 percent structural damage, also valued at approximately $60,000. The third home, valued at $120,000, was completely destroyed; however, the occupants—a family of four—managed to escape unharmed.

In light of these recent events, Mr. Sowane urged homeowners to take fire safety precautions seriously. These include proper storage of flammable materials, using non-flammable surfaces for candles and mosquito coils, and ensuring that fires are completely extinguished before leaving homes unattended. He emphasized the importance of promptly reporting emergencies by calling 910, allowing firefighters a better chance to respond effectively.

The NFA continues to advocate for better fire safety practices, particularly in informal settlements where the risk is heightened due to inadequate infrastructure. Engaging the community through education and awareness is vital for preventing future incidents.

This recent event serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and fire safety measures. By installing proper safety standards and encouraging responsive action in cases of emergencies, there is hope for reducing the incidence and impact of similar tragedies in the future.
