A two-story building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was tragically engulfed in flames early yesterday morning. The incident occurred outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary and was confirmed by the National Fire Authority’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowani.

The Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 AM. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the building ablaze and promptly took action to control the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Thanks to their efforts, the fire brigade was able to extinguish the flames, with the Korolevu team providing assistance during the incident.

The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, was home to his family, including his wife and son-in-law, Rohit Chand, who alerted them about the fire. The structure contained a shopping complex with four small shops, such as a kava shop, on the ground level, while the upper floor housed a nightclub and the Shankar’s apartment. Unfortunately, the top floor suffered complete destruction, resulting in estimated damages of around $750,000.

Mr. Sowani further mentioned that a fire investigation would be initiated to uncover the possible cause of the fire. He emphasized the importance of public vigilance in maintaining fire safety in homes.

This incident underscores the ongoing need for fire safety awareness and preparedness within communities. While the loss is significant, the prompt response from the fire brigade averted potential injuries or further property loss, showcasing the effectiveness of emergency services in crisis situations. Community members are reminded to stay alert and take preventive measures to secure their homes against fire hazards.
