A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The incident occurred outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, as confirmed by Puamau Sowani, the chief executive officer of the National Fire Authority.
The Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call around 2:30 AM, prompting the fire brigade to respond promptly. Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. They quickly took action to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. With the assistance of the Korolevu team, they managed to extinguish the fire while addressing several hotspots.
The property, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, contained a shopping complex with four retail shops on the ground floor—including a kava shop—alongside a nightclub and living quarters on the second floor. Thankfully, Hari and his wife were alerted to the danger by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, allowing them to evacuate in time. Unfortunately, the top floor suffered complete destruction, and the estimated damage is around $750,000.
A fire investigation is set to be conducted to ascertain the cause of the blaze. In light of this incident, Mr. Sowani emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness, urging the public to remain vigilant in ensuring their homes are fire-secure.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for community members to take active steps toward fire prevention. While the damage is significant and loss devastating for the Shankar family, the swift response of the fire service and the safe evacuation of the residents highlight the importance of preparedness in emergency situations.
