A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of yesterday morning. According to Puamau Sowani, the chief executive officer of the National Fire Authority, firefighters from the Sigatoka Fire Station responded to an emergency call at approximately 2:30 AM.
Upon arrival, the fire brigade found the building ablaze and took immediate action to control the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby structures. Their efforts were aided by a team from Korolevu, and the fire was eventually extinguished after addressing various hotspots.
The building, which belonged to 69-year-old Hari Shankar, included a shopping complex with four shops on the ground floor—one of which was a kava shop—as well as a nightclub and the owner’s three-bedroom apartment on the upper level. Fortunately, Shankar and his wife were alerted to the fire by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, allowing them to escape without injury.
Sadly, the fire caused complete destruction of the top floor, with damages estimated at around $750,000. Mr. Sowani indicated that a fire investigation would be conducted to identify the likely cause of the blaze. He also emphasized the importance of fire safety, urging community members to take measures to protect their homes from potential fire hazards.
While this incident is indeed tragic, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and preparedness against fire risks, highlighting the critical role of community awareness in safeguarding lives and properties.
In summary, a fire in Naidovi led to the total loss of a building, prompting authorities to investigate the incident and reinforce fire safety messages to the public.
