A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning, as confirmed by Puamau Sowani, the chief executive officer of the National Fire Authority. Firefighters received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 a.m. and arrived on the scene to find the structure engulfed in flames.
The fire brigade promptly began efforts to contain the blaze, successfully controlling its spread and extinguishing the remaining hotspots, with assistance from the Korolevu team. The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, contained a three-bedroom apartment where he and his wife were sleeping at the time of the incident. They were alerted to the fire by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, who acted swiftly to wake them.
The ground floor of the building housed a variety of businesses, including a shopping complex with four small shops and a kava store, while the upper level featured a nightclub and the owner’s residence. The damage to the building was extensive, primarily affecting the top floor, with an estimated cost of up to $750,000. A thorough investigation into the fire’s cause will be launched by authorities.
Sowani has emphasized the importance of fire safety, urging the community to take precautions to protect their homes from potential fire hazards.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for fire safety awareness in our communities. While the loss is significant for the owner and the businesses affected, it also highlights the valiant efforts of the local fire brigades in responding to emergencies. Their swift action likely prevented further loss and damage, demonstrating the importance of preparedness and community support in times of crisis.
