A two-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by a fire early yesterday morning. The incident occurred outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, and the National Fire Authority’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowani, confirmed the report.
The Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 AM. Fire crews arrived on the scene to find the building engulfed in flames. The firefighters quickly took measures to prevent the fire from spreading and successfully brought the situation under control. With the help of the team from Korolevu, they diligently worked on extinguishing hotspots to ensure the fire was completely out.
The structure, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, was home to his family’s three-bedroom apartment and a shopping complex that included four small enterprises, such as a kava shop. The upper level contained a nightclub and the owner’s living quarters. Unfortunately, the fire caused complete destruction of the top floor, with damages estimated at around $750,000.
A fire investigation is set to take place to determine the suspected cause of this incident. Mr. Sowani emphasized the importance of public vigilance regarding fire safety in homes and businesses.
This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of fire hazards, highlighting the critical need for safety measures in residential and commercial settings. By taking proactive steps, such as regular safety checks and fire drills, communities can enhance safety and minimize risks.
Despite the devastating loss, the prompt response from the fire brigade potentially saved other nearby structures from damage, illustrating the dedication of first responders to protecting lives and property.
