Fire Destroys Double-Storey Building in Cuvu: What You Need to Know

A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The National Fire Authority’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowani, confirmed the incident, stating that the Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call around 2:30 am.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. They quickly worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. The dedicated team continued to address hotspots and ultimately extinguished the blaze, with assistance from the Korolevu team.

The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, served as a mixed-use complex, housing a shopping area with four small shops, including a kava shop, on the ground floor, while the upper level contained a nightclub and the owner’s apartment. Fortunately, Mr. Shankar and his wife were alerted to the fire by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, allowing them to escape safely.

Unfortunately, the top floor suffered complete destruction, with estimated damages reaching $750,000. Following this devastating incident, a fire investigation will be conducted to ascertain the potential cause of the fire. Mr. Sowani encouraged the public to remain vigilant about fire safety in their homes.

While this situation is undoubtedly tragic for the owner and the local community, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and preparedness.
